Owner Data Oversight Across Engineering Partner (Offshore Platform)
Overview
Vista enabled a major resource operator to gain real-time visibility into engineering deliverables from an external engineering partner by automating the integration of design data into AVEVA AIM.
The solution replaced manual, document-based data transfers with a structured, automated pipeline aligned to the owner’s data model.
Client
A global mining and resources company
Project/Facility
Enterprise digital engineering and information management systems
Situation
The client was executing a major offshore platform project using an external engineering partner and had intentionally structured the project to enable owner oversight. Engineering deliverables were issued as structured data files and stored in Aconex, while AVEVA AIM was selected as the target platform for managing and validating engineering information.
To remove the reliance on manual handling of weekly file transfers, the client required a system integration solution to automate data transfer and ensure alignment with their asset information standards.
Solution
Vista implemented AVEVA AIM and AVEVA Engineering to establish a structured, owner-controlled engineering data environment. While the engineering partner continued to deliver design data through Aconex, the client was able to manage and validate a subset of critical data directly within their own systems.
To enable this, Vista developed a custom integration solution to automatically extract engineering data from Aconex and populate both AVEVA AIM and AVEVA Engineering on a scheduled basis. Given the limitations of standard AVEVA interfaces, this required development of specialized integration methods to create and update data within the platforms.
In parallel, Vista refined the client’s data model within AIM to ensure incoming data could be properly structured, validated, and aligned with asset information standards.
This approach transformed periodic file-based deliverables into structured, accessible data, enabling the client to monitor engineering progress, validate outputs, and maintain ongoing visibility into the engineering partner’s work throughout the design phase.
Key Outcomes
Key success factors included:
- Enabled real-time visibility into engineering partner deliverables throughout the design phase
- Established an owner-controlled engineering environment for managing and validating critical data
- Transformed weekly file-based deliverables into structured, accessible data within AVEVA platforms
- Improved ability to monitor, validate and govern engineering outputs from external partners
- Reduced reliance on manual processing and document-based review workflows
- Aligned engineering data with asset information standards for downstream use
Systems & Technology
The project involved configuration and integration of the following systems:
- AVEVA Engineering
- AVEVA AIM
- AVEVA Information Standards Manager (ISM)
- AVEVA Work Tasks
Engineering Applications
This approach is applicable to projects where engineering is executed by external partners and the owner requires ongoing visibility and control of deliverables. By automating the integration of engineering data into structured platforms, organizations can reduce reliance on document-based workflows while improving oversight, data quality, and alignment with asset information standards.
