Cloud Collaboration for Distributed Engineering Teams

Green divider line

Engineering teams are no longer in one building, and aging on-premises servers were never built for secure shared access to heavy design applications. Vista Projects helps you build and run your own secure cloud environment for your engineering software and single source of truth, so distributed teams work from the same current data on the same applications, wherever they are. We architect and provision the environment in your cloud account using infrastructure-as-code, then hand it over for your team to own, with optional ongoing support and disciplined cost and security control.

What Is Cloud Collaboration for Engineering?

Cloud collaboration for engineering is the practice of running engineering applications, project data, and the single source of truth in a cloud environment rather than on local servers, so that distributed teams can access the same tools and the same current data from any location. It removes the constraint that heavy design software, with its large file sizes and graphics demands, has historically had to run on a workstation physically near the data.

For industrial owners and engineering teams, the value is practical. Engineers in different offices, time zones, or partner organizations open the same model on the same application, rather than emailing files or maintaining duplicate copies. The data stays in one secured place, access is controlled centrally, and the environment can scale up for a busy project phase and back down afterward.

Vista treats the cloud as the place where your single-source-of-truth data environment lives and is shared securely. We help you build and run that environment in your own cloud account. We are platform-agnostic about the engineering software you run, including platforms such as AVEVA, Autodesk AutoCAD and Plant 3D, Hexagon, and Bentley. For the cloud platform itself we build on AWS and Azure, and we provision the environment with Terraform infrastructure-as-code.

How We Deliver Cloud Collaboration

Green divider line

Vista’s cloud collaboration approach starts with where your current setup is holding the team back, aging on-premises infrastructure, no in-house cloud expertise, no infrastructure-as-code, or distributed teams without secure shared access to heavy engineering applications, and works toward a cloud environment your team owns and can actually use.

Step 1

Assessment and Target Architecture

We assess your current environment, the engineering applications in use, the data they depend on, how teams are distributed, and any security or compliance constraints, then define a target cloud architecture for your own cloud account. The output is a reference design covering the network topology, identity and access model, storage, and the application approach, sized to your team and your workloads.

Step 2

Infrastructure-as-Code Provisioning

Vista provisions the environment in your cloud account with Terraform infrastructure-as-code rather than by hand. Our reference build uses a multi-tier VPC with separate public, application, database, and workstation subnets across two availability zones, AWS Managed Microsoft AD for centralized identity, and Amazon FSx for Windows file shares for the engineering data. Defining the environment as code makes it repeatable, reviewable, and straightforward for your team to rebuild or extend.

Step 3

Application Setup and Secure Access

We install and configure your engineering applications in your environment and stand up secure remote access, including GPU-backed virtual workstations for heavy 3D design work, with access governed through centralized directory accounts.

Step 4

Cost Control, Security Hardening, and Handover

We add automated scheduling so non-production compute stops outside business hours, harden the security groups and access paths, configure backups, and hand the environment over to your team with documentation and runbooks. You own and run the environment; we remain available for optional ongoing support as your project scales.

What You Gain

  • An environment you own. Vista builds the cloud environment in your own account and hands it over, so you keep full control of your data, your costs, and your access, rather than depending on a third party to hold your systems.
  • Secure shared access for distributed teams. Engineers in different offices, time zones, and partner organizations work on the same applications and the same current data, with access controlled centrally through directory accounts rather than scattered local logins. This directly addresses teams stuck on aging on-premises infrastructure that was never built for remote access to heavy engineering software.
  • Security and compliance built into the architecture. Workloads run in a segmented network with private subnets, controlled access paths, and centralized identity. Where regulated data is involved, Vista has helped clients build environments in government-grade cloud to meet ITAR and EAR compliance.
  • Predictable, controlled cloud cost. Automated scheduling stops non-production compute outside business hours, and infrastructure-as-code makes the running cost of the environment visible and adjustable rather than opaque. In Vista’s reference environment, automated scheduling reduces effective compute cost by roughly 60 percent.
  • No need for in-house cloud expertise. Vista architects, provisions, and hands over the environment, and can help operate it if you choose, so teams without dedicated cloud or infrastructure staff can stand up and own a professionally built cloud platform for their engineering work.

Who This Service Is For

Cloud collaboration delivers the greatest value to engineering teams running heavy design software across multiple locations, and to owners whose data carries security or compliance obligations.

  • Oil and Gas.
Operators and their engineering partners who need shared, secure access to design models, historian data, and project information across distributed offices and field sites.
  • Power Generation and Nuclear.
Utilities and developers operating under strict configuration management and, in some cases, export-control or government-grade compliance requirements for their engineering data.
  • Petrochemical.
Process facilities with large 3D models and dense engineering data that are difficult to share across teams from aging on-premises infrastructure.
  • Mining and Minerals Processing.
Remote operations and project teams that need secure access to engineering applications and data without a local server room at every site.
  • Industrial Manufacturing.
Engineering groups collaborating with external EPC and partner teams who need controlled, shared access to a common design environment.

How Clients Use This Service

Compliance-Driven Cloud Build: Advanced Reactor Developer

An advanced reactor developer needed to move its engineering software suite off local infrastructure and into a government-grade cloud environment to meet ITAR and EAR export-control compliance. Vista provisioned the compliant environment in the client’s AWS GovCloud account using Terraform infrastructure-as-code and migrated the engineering platform without losing the customer’s custom conceptual data model. The team now owns and runs its engineering work in a compliant cloud environment rather than on local servers.

Reusable Production-Grade Reference Architecture: Vista Cloud Pattern

Vista has built a production-grade, reusable cloud reference architecture, defined entirely as Terraform infrastructure-as-code, that it deploys into clients’ own cloud accounts. The pattern uses a multi-tier VPC across two availability zones, AWS Managed Microsoft AD for centralized identity, Amazon FSx for Windows file shares, and automated scheduling and security controls. Clients own and run the resulting environment; Vista provides the pattern, the build, and optional ongoing support.

Secure Remote Access for a Distributed Engineering Team: Multi-Site Operator

A multi-site engineering group needed its distributed teams and external partners to work on heavy 3D design applications without shipping files or maintaining duplicate environments. Vista built cloud-based virtual workstations with GPU-backed compute and centralized access control in the client’s environment, so every team worked on the same models in the same place, accessed securely from any location.

Why Work With Vista on Cloud Collaboration

Green divider line

Vista Projects has been delivering engineering for industrial facilities for over 40 years, and we have been building data-centric digital engineering solutions since 2014. We help clients run the engineering platforms they already use rather than pushing a single vendor, and where deep platform certification matters, we hold AVEVA Registered System Integrator status for asset information management.

Three differentiators are specific to cloud collaboration:

Production infrastructure-as-code.

Vista builds cloud environments defined entirely in Terraform, with a multi-tier VPC, AWS Managed Microsoft AD, and Amazon FSx for Windows file shares. The team architecting your environment works in this stack day to day.

Compliance-grade build experience.

Vista has helped clients build engineering environments in AWS GovCloud to meet ITAR and EAR export-control requirements, including migrating a customer’s environment while preserving its custom data model.

Engineering and cloud from one team.

The people standing up your cloud are the same people who deliver and integrate engineering software, so the platform is built around real engineering workloads rather than generic IT assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Green divider line
What is cloud collaboration for engineering teams?

Cloud collaboration for engineering is running engineering applications, project data, and the single source of truth in a cloud environment so distributed teams can access the same tools and the same current data from any location. It replaces local servers and emailed file copies with one secured, centrally managed environment that scales with the work.

Does Vista host our environment, or do we?

You do. Vista is not a hosting provider. We architect and provision the environment in your own cloud account, then hand it over for your team to own and run. We can provide optional ongoing support or help operate it if you choose, but the environment, the data, and the account stay yours.

Which cloud platforms does Vista use?

Vista builds on AWS and Azure, and provisions every environment with Terraform infrastructure-as-code in your own cloud account so it is repeatable and reviewable. Where export-control or government-grade compliance applies, we have helped clients build in AWS GovCloud. We are platform-agnostic about the engineering software you run, including platforms such as AVEVA, Autodesk AutoCAD and Plant 3D, Hexagon, and Bentley.

Can heavy 3D engineering applications run in the cloud?

Yes. Vista sets up heavy design applications on cloud-based virtual workstations with GPU-backed compute in your environment, so 3D modeling and large-file work runs in the cloud and is accessed securely from any location. This removes the old constraint of needing a powerful workstation physically near the data.

We have no in-house cloud team. Can Vista still help?

Yes. Vista architects, provisions, and hands over the environment, and can help operate or extend it on your behalf if you choose, so teams without dedicated cloud or infrastructure staff still get a professionally built platform that they own. We hand over documentation and runbooks so your team can take it from there.
