Cloud-Based Digital Engineering Platform Development for Advanced Nuclear

Overview

Vista supported an advanced nuclear technology developer in establishing and expanding a cloud-based digital engineering platform using AVEVA tools. The work included migration to a client-hosted environment, implementation of engineering capabilities, and development of standardized design libraries.

The platform enables engineering teams to perform modeling, detailing, and data management within a unified environment, reducing reliance on external tools and supporting scalable development of complex nuclear systems.

Client

A North American advanced nuclear technology developer

Project/Facility

Enterprise digital engineering and design environment

Situation

The client required a secure and scalable digital engineering platform to support development of advanced nuclear technologies. While AVEVA tools were already in use, the existing hosted environment did not meet U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security requirements, limiting its suitability for ongoing development work.

In addition, engineering workflows relied on a combination of native AVEVA capabilities and external tools for key design activities, creating inefficiencies and limiting integration across disciplines.

The client required migration to a compliant, self-managed cloud environment, along with enhancements to modeling capabilities and development of standardized design components to support consistent and scalable engineering execution.

Solution

Vista supported the migration of the client’s AVEVA environment from a vendor-hosted platform to a fully client-owned and managed AWS environment that met U.S. DOE security requirements. This included transfer of existing AVEVA projects and installation and configuration of AVEVA Engineering, AVEVA E3D, and related tools within the new environment.

Following migration, Vista expanded the client’s engineering capabilities within AVEVA by developing native modeling and detailing functionality. This included creation of custom structural joints and catalogues within AVEVA E3D, enabling structural detailing to be performed directly within the platform rather than relying on external tools.

Vista also developed a vendor-specific piping support library within AVEVA E3D based on the client’s selected supplier. The library included parametric models and standardized configurations for piping supports, enabling accurate modeling and supporting generation of material take-offs and drawings directly from the platform.

These enhancements were supported by configuration of data structures and workflows to ensure consistency across engineering disciplines and alignment with the client’s evolving digital engineering standards.

This approach established a secure, scalable engineering environment while enabling design, detailing, and data management to be performed within a unified AVEVA platform.

Key Outcomes

Key success factors included:

Systems & Technology

The project included configuration and integration of:
  • AVEVA Unified Engineering
  • AVEVA E3D and AVEVA Draw
  • AVEVA Engineering
  • AVEVA P&ID
  • AVEVA Electrical and Instrumentation (supporting scope)
  • AWS cloud infrastructure

Engineering Applications

This approach is applicable to organizations developing complex technologies that require secure, scalable digital engineering environments. It is particularly relevant where there is a need to consolidate engineering workflows within a single platform and reduce reliance on external tools.

By combining cloud-based infrastructure with standardized design libraries and integrated engineering tools, organizations can improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability of engineering execution. Vista can also support organizations that do not have dedicated internal IT resources by providing architecture and implementation expertise to establish and manage these environments.
