Mack Attack! Vista’s Karate Champ Competes in NYC

With both imposing stance and exuberant personality, it’s no wonder Vista Buyer / Expediter Doug Shermack is passionate about Kyokushin, a style of karate in which opponents fight to test each other’s skills and training, but greet each other with a friendly handshake and a big hug.

Doug began his training 5 years ago, when he was searching for an activity to do with his son, Brandon. After a friend of Doug’s from grade school introduced him to Kyokushin, Doug and Brandon joined the Calgary Kyokushin Karate Club. (Like any reasonable father, Doug told Brandon that he is welcome to quit – once he completes his black belt.)

Some of Doug’s most memorable matches took place in Japan; he had never before fought for an audience of thousands, an experience he describes as simultaneously nerve racking and exhilarating. Doug has also competed in Vancouver, L.A., Calgary, Edmonton, and most recently, in New York at the 2015 All American Open Karate Championships, where he placed 4th in the Sr. Men’s Heavyweight Division. Brandon also competed in the championships, where he was the youngest competitor from the father-son duo’s club to compete internationally, placing 2nd in both Kumite and Kata.

Vista is proud to support Doug in is karate training and would like to congratulate both Doug and Brandon on their recent accomplishments in New York!
