As reported by CBC News, the Federal Court of Appeal overturned approval of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline project. The Court found Canada’s largest pipeline operator did not sufficiently consult with First Nations communities affected by the pipeline, calling the opportunity to engage that was offered “brief, hurried and inadequate”.
Northern Gateway had received approval from the federal government after a joint review panel with the National Energy Board (NEB) green-lighted the project, subject to 209 conditions.
John Carruthers, President of Northern Gateway, released a statement reaffirming Enbridge’s commitment to engage with First Nations communities and to continue with the project.
