First Steam has been achieved at the Surmont 2 project, said ConocoPhillips in a recent media release.
This is ConocoPhillip’s second phase of expansion at Surmont, a SAGD facility located in the Athabasca Region of NE Alberta. This phase is expected to add 118,000 barrels of oil per day (BPD) as production ramps-up through 2017. The nameplate capacity for Surmont 1 and 2 will reach 150,000 BPD.
As stated in the release, “first steam is a significant step toward production, or first oil, expected by third quarter this year.” Despite weak oil prices, several projects in the oil sands regions have continued to press on, including Husky Energy’s Rush Lake thermal project, which began production at the end of May.
